When Harvey left our organization to go work for Florida, we didn't even try to replace him because, quite frankly, his legacy was already throughout our system. All of the players and coaches and staff he touched over the years... had become imbued with his philosophy and approach to the game. They have become Harvey's disciples. -SANDY ANDERSON, former President and General Manager, Oakland Athletics, former Executive Vice President, Office of Major League Baseball, currently General Manager, New York Mets.Harvey Dorfman's insights are exceptional and valuable. This book provides the best approaches for business leaders and those who coach and supervise others. -RUSS BRANDON, President, Buffalo Bills. When you talk to Harv, you get the truth from him, whether you like it or not. He always says, 'I don't care about your feelings. I care about your actions.' -TIM BELCHER, former Major League Pitcher and Pitching Coach. He's truly amazing. It's clear most people don't want to hear the truth about themselves, but Harv gets in your face, uses a few choice words to get your attention, and he's got you. -AL LEITER, former Major League Pitcher, currently Studio Analyst and Commentator.Harv is absolutely unique. He's for real - a straight shooter. He gives it to you right on the line, whether you like it or not. Not many people can - or will - do that. -WALT WEISS, former Major League All-Star Shortstop, currently manager of the Colorado Rockies.

I have given this four stars because it's basically an incomplete review, but the early returns are positive. I bought this for my fifteen year old son who has played baseball since he was in kindergarten. He loves the game and always has, but he has struggled since beginning high school ball, particularly at the plate (he is currently a sophomore). He has always had a lot of team and individual success in this sport, so I was looking for something to help him. He even mentioned that he used to relish coming to the plate in high pressure situations, but recently, he wasn't nearly as confident as he used to be. A couple of years ago, when the Cleveland Indians' Corey Kluber won the American League Cy Young Award, in one of his interviews, he credited Harvey Dorfman's book on pitching as to how he keeps such an even keel. If you watch Corey pitch, you can't tell if he just gave up a three-run jack or if he struck out the side on nine pitches. His demeanor remains the same. Encouraged by that endorsement, and positive reviews on Amazon, I picked out this book for my son based on the fact that this particular book covers the entire game of baseball. He read two chapters the other night, and played in a game the next day. In that game, he went 2-4 with 4 RBIs, his first solid hits in some time, and just missed an infield single on a bang-bang call at first. As he took the field after his first RBI single, he found me in the stands with a smile on his face and mouthed the words, "It's the book." For him to have read only two chapters so far and give that book direct credit for his success the NEXT DAY speaks volumes. I have to highly recommend this for anyone who wants to get better mentally in the game of baseball, and watch that mental clarity and toughness translate to on-field success.
This book is life changing . Once you read it and really digest what the material is saying , you will never have another excuse in life againIt made me realize how I always blamed other things when I didn't perform in sports like I wanted. It seriously cleaned out all the cobwebs and demons we all have and use for excuses in everyday life. Use it for sports , use it for life , use it for work.. Most of all use it for you
I bought this book hoping to get some tips to help my 9 year old son in little league. He's not a natural athlete, but he really loves the game an can do OK. During practice and in the batting cages, he doesn't have a lot of power but he makes good solid contact, and in his past 2 years playing he rarely struck out. Since moving up to pony ball he had really struggled to make contact, 2-3 Ks per game. I knew it was mostly in his head, as his mechanics are quite solid. We were both frustrated, and I didn't want him to lose his love of baseball because of it.This book was VERY helpful for every aspect of the game, be it hitting, fielding, pitching, or baserunning. It discussed both good and bad mental approaches to the game, with real world examples taken from MLB, like Doug DeCinces struggling to fill Brooks Robinson's shoes to Steve Sax's difficulties throwing to first, and how a change in approach can make all the difference. The lessons discussed, from attitudes and confidence, to taking control and responsibility for your actions, can be applied not just to baseball but to life in general, and help guide you to success.Applying lessons from the book, my son has learned to quiet all the thoughts and pressures in his head when he is at the plate, and in the field, and trust his skills. He will never be Ted Williams, but he's making contact again, and having some success. His team just won the league championship, and he now feels he contributed. Most importantly, though, his is smiling again and having fun playing.Even if you have only a casual interest in baseball, I highly recommend this book.
My husband is a baseball fan and I am learning to be. This book though! Just started it and it's amazing! It doesn't pertain to just baseball. It's any sport or talent and even life. It really is a great read to reread.
this book is amazing. I have the mental game of hitting and I swear by that book. at 46, I am still playing hardball. and as corny as this sounds, these two books have totally changed my perspective and the way I am playing. All my hitting stats are doubled from last year and we are only 1/2 way through the season. a MUST have for every Ball player. It is also a great book on LIFE as well
I was given this book as a freshman in college where I played for a Division I school. Actually, every player on the pitching staff was given the book. Understanding my own self doubt and being able take advantage of the situation clearly helped me become one of the top 5 ERA leaders in the country my junior year in college. I have read the book every year to understand and manage the self doubt I feel when the pressure of a situations mounts. Reading one chapter of the book will allow any serious ballplayer to recognize the principles and words the book is portraying. This book is a must read for any competitive spirit, whether it be sports or professional life, because it incorporates all those fears you have always encountered and shows you how to control them and use them to your advantage. In fact, as a litigation lawyer, I often read a couple of chapters of the book before going to trial.
I bought this as a gift for my 13 year old nephew who had been playing baseball since he was little. He and his whole family love the game and this book has so much information in it, it should be treasured for years.
Should be required reading for parents and coaches as you will clearly see where some of your well intentioned ways are part of the problem that can limit a young player's performance. Had originally bought this as a last resort (based on other positive Amazon recommendations) as my son was struggling at the plate after being an outstanding hitter most of his young career. Made me completely change the way I approach the game with him and it has paid major dividends in a very short period of time (but I couldn't put it down once I started reading it). Much broader applicability than the game of baseball and while it gets to be a dense read at times it was well worth the investment.
